SH’MA ISRAEL

Description

Probably, very few people know that in the building of the Marjanishvili Theater, in 1910 - 1932, there was a Tbilisi Yiddish-language theater. The plays were staged according to the program of the Yiddish theaters of New York and Warsaw.

The archive saved us very little and only a sketch of one performance came to us - "Shimne Israel/שמע ישראל". The play belongs to Osip Dumov, aka Joseph Perelman, which depicts the life of Jews living in the Russian Empire.

The play "Hear Israel/שמע ישראל" was staged in Tbilisi in November 1912. The same performance, this time, in 2024, will be revived by the restored Yiddish theater of Tbilisi, in which Georgians and Jews play with great love.

SH’MA Israel -(Shme Yisrael )- This is the story of a man angry with God who prayed all his life and God betrayed him when he needed him the most. This is a story about a Jewish family, which is tortured by pogroms, persecution, personal pain, forced to give up the law and asks a tiny question: "For what?"
